# Electrical Short Circuit

An electrical short circuit occurs when a path of very low resistance allows unusually high current to flow outside its intended circuit. This happens when two live circuit wires touch each other or a live wire contacts ground. The excessively high current flow can cause overheating that damages wiring insulation and possibly lead to fire. Short circuits are caused by age, physical damage like cuts or punctures of wiring, improper installation where wires cross, and infiltration of moisture or foreign objects. Fuses and circuit breakers function to shut off power in the event of a short, but the defect itself must still be located and repaired. Preventive maintenance and properly installed electrical systems help avoid short circuits.
